The Ultimate Lightwind board for Advanced Riders

Looking for more precision and responsiveness for parawinging or light wind winging? The Emissary has arrived with the answer.

Through iterations of CFD simulation, prototyping, and testing, the design of the larger boards diverged into a unique sub range. While the smaller sizes delivers the answer to the dedicated foiler's everyday board, the 66 and 78 are the perfect compliment for low powered sail conditions. Be this parawinging or super lightwind winging, the Emissary's combination of efficiency and performance will get you foiling waves with the least amount of sail input.

The Problem and the Process

The question with the Emissary began as “how much volume can we remove while retaining the ability to get on foil with very low sail power”. Using the Flux as a start point, CFD software was applied to simulate a multitude of design variations. Testing efficiency through a range of different angles of attack began to form a representational efficiency model of each hull building speed and taking off. We then combined the features of the most successful variations and recursively tested the best designs against each other until a clear winner emerged. Minor refinements were made during rounds of prototyping and testing to improve usability with the end result being a hull optimized for the greatest possible efficiency at takeoff with the minimal possible volume.

Performance First Design

Driven by hydrodynamics, the minimized volume in the nose and tail significantly reduce swing-weight despite the longer lengths. The width is based on the ideal stance width of the target size riders controlling higher aspect foils ideal for underpowered conditions.

Although the design compromises some of the incredible ease of use the Flux is known for, it provides advanced intermediate and above foilers the ability to further downsize their lightwind board while actually gaining low end capability.

Confidence inspiring

Rest assured that the features that provide the Flux its incredible smooth touchdown recovery have been carried over to the new hull shape, so when the wind starts cranking, the Emissary delivers.

Although designed as a parawing and dedicated high performance lightwind board, wingers have been loving the 66L in particular as a one board quiver. This is even more relevant if your local spot is an inland lake or other light wind destination. The hull design will get you on foil in the very lightest winds while still ripping on your travels to spots with cranking conditions.

Take off and Release...

The tail shape has been optimized for building speed in a straight line while minimizing drag during the higher angles of attack needed for optimal foil take off.

While this works great for flat water/pumping takeoffs it is of particular benefit to parawinging by allowing you to more efficiently utilize the energy of the small bumps for take-offs in underpowered conditions on the parawing.

In addition to hydrodynamic efficiency, the chines becoming progressively steeper towards the rear provide better rail clearance in critical turns as well as great release when the board touches down at high bank angles.

Sizing Reccomendations

Rather than the more versatile size range of the Flux, the 66L has been intentionally engineered for lighter riders (130 - 190lbs) while the 78L and 90 better serve heavier riders (160 - 210lbs and 190 - 240lbs, respectively)

While by no means a hard rule, those looking to use the Emissary for the intended purpose of a parawing or a dedicated lightwind board will have the most success within the recommended weight.

The Perfect Fit

Zero-rocker through the standing area of the deck and a slightly more aggressive concave than the Flux provides a comfortable and locked in feeling while riding strapless.

The driving factor for the width of each board is to maintain just enough deck space for the ideal stance to ensure uncompromised control over high aspect foils during critical turns. For this reason, the rail shape at the top of the board has been sharpened and the deck pad extends as far out as possible.

Low Drag Carry Handle

Being slightly wider and thicker, the 78L Emissary includes a built in FCS II box and mini G10 fin.

The fin functions as a streamlined and lightweight handle for those whose arms are not long enough to carry the 78L like a surfboard. This system allows the fin to be reversed, providing two handle positions which balance a wider range of foil mounting positions.

Made in the EU

The Emissary is built to last. The Appletree factory in Portugal applies a full carbon layup over a CNC cut closed-cell foam core. Vacuum resin infusion technology is used to saturate the cloth and achieve the ideal fiber to resin ratio to optimize stiffness and durability.

This process is what allows Appletree to create a permanent bond to their proprietary foam core, and uniquely results in a board that will not be damaged by water ingress - even if the outer skin is damaged.

Along with their world renowned track reinforcing technology, the Emissary is a board you can rely on to maintain peak performance for years to come.

Emissary 78l - my flow state board

Having made the journey through every board sport over the past 40 years, the best boards are the ones you forget. The board where you achieve your flow state without thinking about it because there are no negatives to focus on. For my style of riding, the Emissary is that wing board.

To put things into context, I am a rather clumsy 57 year old who weighs too much (105kg) and is of the larger frame (6’2”) with size 12 feet!! More of a power cruiser than a dainty trixter!! I’m too old to damage myself jumping/doing tricks so my riding is all about riding swell lines.

Having come from 3 boards in my quiver (Omen Flux 72l, KT Super K 92l and Takoon Escape SW 113l), I desired one board that would do everything. Following discussion with Greg, the 78l Emissary seemed the ideal solution.

Having tested it in a range of conditions over the past 5 days in Fuerteventura, I must say I can’t find any of those negatives!! The first few days have been on a 4.5m2 Unit SLS and an Armstrong MA1000 so reasonably well powered with a decent rolling swell. I have found that the Emissary is easier to start than the Flux with the length adding some stability despite the narrower width. This may be a result of the new deck pad which is excellent but I certainly had no issues with stability even in a fairly lively sea state. In these winds, the board comes onto foil effortlessly. Once on foil, the length of the board disappears and you forget about the 2ft of tail behind you. In fact, given the narrowness of the nose, the board actually feels smaller than the Flux did (which was 1ft shorter). There was no noticeable windage on the nose and riding swells downwind was very predictable with hard carving easy with no catching of the rail.

A few sessions on my light-wind setup(5.5m2 unit D/Lab and MA1225) confirms that the board is no slouch coming to foil. There is absolutely no resistance once there is the slightest power in the wing and the board quickly accelerates onto foil with the smallest gust. Touchdowns are the same with no resistance to bouncing back onto foil.

Some previous boards have felt ‘sticky’ coming onto foil and the Emissary is noticeable slippery. There is no effort, it just flows.

I have noted that I am definitely able the use one size smaller wing or foil on the Emissary. It comes to foil so quickly on a gust that there is no need to be on a larger foil/wing which will cause more drag once on foil.

Perhaps my only nemesis is to be expected. Taxying on a 78 l board when you are 105kg means that if the wind drops to nothing, I’m heading to the bottom. It’s a full on sinker for me although the nose does rise very quickly as soon a gust arrives and I certainly would not want to be on a larger board.

As you may tell, I am rather stoked with this board. I’ve been in my flow state for the last week and haven’t been able to find any negatives. The Emissary has added considerable low end wind range over the Flux whilst giving away nothing at the top end. An absolute pleasure to ride and stay in my flow state.

I would also like to thank Greg, who not only has designed a standout board but has been a great chap who has been very helpful/communicative over the past few weeks.

Great single-board option

Having ridden a few of different sizes in the Flux (60, 72, 84), I wanted a single board option for light or strong winds rather than having multiple Flux boards. The Emissary 66L fits that bill perfectly. At 85KG, I can get it up in light wind (13mph) but it still feels great underfoot when the wind starts cranking. If you’re progressing as an intermediate, I’d recommend going ~20% under your body weight for an optimal size. You want this board to sink a bit for stability. It comes up fast!

Emissary 66l

I am 83kg intermediate wingfoiler and I use foils from North sizing from 830cm2 up to 1100 surf and dw style foils. I was looking for a good mid lenght board for swell and wave riding. I asked a quidance from omen because I was really between flux 72l and emissary 66l.
Greg from omen replied me quickly and pointed me towards the emissary 66l. So I ordered emissary and I gotta say that what a amazing board. This is my 5th board and first from omen I was blown away immediately. Super easy to get it going and the connection pumpability and turning is just pleasure. I never believed before that a single piece of equipment can improve riding so much. And the build guality is flawless !
